I’m kind of critical of sports fans because I support the very postmodern theory that everything in life can be explained by analyzing the world competitive sports. However, I don’t consider myself to be overly critical. I’m not critical of which sport someone might be a fan of. I’m not a sports snob and I don’t consider one sport to be superior to another. Everyone has different tastes, and no one should be judged based on the preferences. Black kids should be able to like basketball, stay-at-home moms should be able to like soccer, and Canadians should be able to like curling without anyone passing judgment on them. Nor, am I critical of fans of teams that oppose my favorite teams. I could care less if some asshole wants to ruin his life and root for the New England Patriots. That stuff doesn’t really bother me at all. Additionally, I don’t care if someone is a hardcore sports fan or an occasional sports fan, because I understand the desire to have a real life outside of the microcosm of professional sports.
However, what raises my ire is when fans refer to their favorite teams as “we.” I have a friend who is an adamant Los Angeles Lakers fan and she insists on referring to them in the first person. “WE killed the Kings!” “WE’RE SO going to beat the Celtics tonight.” “WE’RE going to have Lamar Odom come off the bench because WE want to start with a big front court to match-up with the Suns. Shaq’s got nothing on US.” This friend will also try to impose this type of fandom on other fans, such as “YOUR Pistons are going DOWN to OUR Lakers.” I’ve never really understood this type of fan behavior. As far as I know, she isn’t a part of the Lakers organization and has nothing to do with the success or failure of the team. Even if she is a season ticket holder, she’s still just a spectator and the money that she spent has no influence on Kobe Bryant’s jump shot. This would be like someone coming back from a Kanye West concert and saying, “WE had a really good show! The space ship prop kind of distracted US and made US forget our lyrics a little bit, but WE improvised and I’m sure no one noticed. WE’RE the voice of this generation. Why don’t WE ever win music awards?” I don’t understand the need to feel involved; I wasn’t an only child.
That settles it. The “we” sports fans hate music.

We Atlanta Braves agree. go braves.
I think these people need to take a break from supporting their dedicated sports team.
Aggh, this mentality ....
Reminds me of how people speak about countries and whatnot. "WE defeated the British." Excuse me? I had nothing to do with this.
I remember my teacher (a Native American) in my Contemporary Issues in Native America class always saying things like, "YOU drove us onto reservations, YOU thought you were superior," and all that kind of bullshit (since the class was mostly white). Some students got offended and snapped back at her, and for good reason!
I love the NJ Nets and I call them "my babies" when someone asks me who my favorite sports team is, I say something
like, "Oh the Nets are my favorite, they're my boys...my babies." I know I don't own any of them...but I still call them mine.
I think this is similar to "We" or "Us" only instead its "My"... what do you think about that? Am I still at fault?
Yus.
I like that part in Fever Pitch when that kid asks Jimmy Fallon's character, "You spend your life loving the Red Sox, but do they ever love you back?"
Huey and Grampa in The Boondocks.
Gramps: I got sprayed by FIRE HOSES so I could spend your inheritance on this house! You should be more appreciative!
Huey: Wait, so YOU SPECIFICALLY got sprayed with fire hoses? I'm sick of an entire generation of people taking credit for what a few people accomplished.
hahah. good point. i've hearing that a lot because most of my guy friends are all into the whole football thing.
