    So Jealous

    Solstice Reintroduction

My eyes have been bloodshot red for the past two weeks.  This is the direct result of my new soft contact lenses.  All soft contact lenses are composed of two things:  1) Plastic and 2) water.  The differences between the various brands of soft contact lenses lie in the material the plastic is made of and the ratio of plastic to water.  Soft contact lenses act like sponges:  When they’re placed in contact lens solution they absorb the surrounding liquid to maintain its shape and form.  (This is why a contact lens left on the bathroom counter will shrivel up like a raisin.)  When a contact lens is placed on your eye, it sucks up the tear film that covers your eye and conforms to the shape of the cornea/tear film interface.  (This is why soft contact lenses are more comfortable than hard contact lenses.)  My new contact lenses have an extremely high water content, which means that they suck up a lot of my tear film.  This makes my eyes really dry and, thus, really red.  My eyes look like they’re on fire, and the only reason I continue wearing these contact lenses from hell is that I see exceptionally well with them.

Some would say that it’s unhealthy for my eyes to continue wearing these lenses, and they’re probably right.  But as someone who is severely near-sighted, good vision is my prime objective.  If my eyes are suffering and in pain, then I suppose that’s the price I’m willing to pay to see 20/20.  Poets, postmodern enthusiasts, and self-proclaimed smart people like to say sappy things like our eyes are the windows to our souls.  There might be some inexplicable truth to this, despite the fact that our eyes are just a collection of connective tissue and blood vessels.  The truth is that my soul has been tormented, battered, bruised, and broken.  The truth is that I don’t mind it.  The truth is that sometimes I let it happen.  The beauty of pain is that it gives you clarity and lets you see things in a perspective that you’ve never seen before.  Sometimes I need it to open up my Third Eye Blind and wax prose for Dilated Peoples.  Sometimes the pain is worth it.  If you look at my eyes, you’ll see that they’re red.  But, if you look into my eyes, you’ll understand why.

I can see perfectly clear now.
