    The Reconstruction of Shane Varnet

Ten years ago Lauryn Hill released a song called Everything is Everything.  I assumed that this song was about a concept that angsty college poets and coffee shop philosophers like to talk in excess about.  It’s the concept that nothing is a coincidence.  It’s the belief that every occurrence can be explained by something else and that something else can be explained by every occurrence.  It’s the philosophy that our lives are interconnected with the world around us and that’s why we call it the Universe.

I first heard this song ten years ago when I was neither an angsty poet or a coffee shop philosopher.  I was just a stoned college kid trying to rationalize my existence and this song struck a chord with me.  All the spoken word enthusiasts and social science majors seemed to like her, so I assumed L-Boogie had some sort of credibility in terms of existential philosophy.  It’s a philosophy that’s easy to understand but difficult to see in real life.  But, as time goes on, I’m becoming more attuned to the things going on around me.  This past month has been exceptionally revealing:

In the past month my car windshield was cracked when a rock hit it while I was driving home from work.  I’ve had the windshield replaced, but I keep having problems with the new windshield and it’s still being repaired.

Over the past month my work has been building a new office on the other side of town.  We will be moving to that new office by the end of the month.

Over the past month the Starbucks store that I go to every day has been under renovation.  They’re redesigning the store front to look more modern.

Over the past month the bathrooms in my apartment have been gutted out. The pipes have been leaking and new bathtubs are being installed.

Sometimes the Universe acts like an annoying boyfriend or girlfriend:  It’s always talking but we never want to listen.  Many things around me have been broken down to be rebuilt, and if the Universe is trying to tell me that my life is under construction, then it’s probably right.  Sometimes you need to be broken down and gutted out before you can be reconstructed.  Sometimes the Universe will tell you these things.

I’m happy that I’ve found someone to reconstruct with and interpret the Universe with me.
