Starbucks Story Tuesday: Old Brew, New Brew

It has been stated, recorded, and stated again by the Starbucks Empire that their primary goal is to make you consider Starbucks your “third place”, with the “first place” being your home and the “second place” being your work.  Starbucks achieved their goal with me.  I spend more time at Starbucks than any other place on Earth, other than my apartment and my workplace.  You can say what you say about what you think this implies about my character, but at least I can say that I’ve never liked music by Owl City and I probably never will.

But anyway, Starbucks has been feeling less like my third place lately because the staff has almost completely turned over from over a year ago.   Some of the baristas who have left gave me and some of the other frequent customers the heads up that they were leaving.  These were nice gestures, I suppose.  Some of them left for school or home, and others left for better opportunities.  But some of them left without notice.  The most notable absence has been Meredith, who I haven’t seen in almost three weeks and assume has left the store.  This is the same Meredith who has been the subject of almost all of the Starbucks Story Tuesday stories.

There really is no story here, other than that walking into Starbucks now feels like walking into an unfamiliar coffee house.  The weird thing is that all the new baristas already recognize me and know my name, but this doesn’t make the place feel homey.  I felt perfectly comfortable with the old staff that, despite seeing me every fucking day, had no idea who I was.  There was something warm and comfortable about Meredith’s persistent indifference to my existence that I think I’m going to miss.

I suppose I could tell a story about how all the new baristas are all nice and friendly and normal all that stuff, but that would be boring and hardly worthy of Starbucks Story Tuesday.

    Now what?
